SERVICES OFFERED

NEW PATIENT HEALTH CHECK

We require all new patients to undergo a health check examination after registration. This is extremely important as your records from your previous GP will take some time to reach us. Also it will give us the opportunity to meet you in person and formally welcome you to the practice.

When you attend for the health check you will be asked to provide a sample of your urine for testing and also a list of any medication you are currently taking.

PATIENTS OVER AGE 75

If you are over the age of 75, you will be invited by the practice nurse for a health check every year. This will normally be done at the surgery but, if you are housebound, a home visit can be arranged.

CHILD IMMUNISATION

Child health development checks and immunisations are undertaken by the doctors and practice nurses with the assistance of the health visitors.

Please check the following points before bringing your child to the surgery. There is sometimes bad publicity in the newspaper about immunisation in children but remember: your child is at much greater risk from contracting the disease than he or she is from suffering a reaction to the immunisation. If you have concerns about immunising your child please discuss it with your doctor.

1 .        Is your child suffering from any feverish illness? Don't worry about a runny nose without a fever.

2,         Does the child's parent, brother or sister suffer from epilepsy? Epilepsy in more distant relatives is not considered a problem.

3.        Is your child taking steroid treatment?

4.      Does your child suffer from any disease affecting his or her immune system?

5.         Does your child suffer from a severe reaction to eggs?

6.                    Has your child suffered from a reaction to any previous immunisation injection?

7.                    Has your child got a high temperature now?

If the answer to any of the questions above is yes, then tell your doctor.

Smears are taken by our fully trained practice nurses. If you are between 25 and 64 and have not had a smear taken within the last three years we strongly advise you to make use of this service as it helps prevent cancer of the cervix (the neck of the womb). It is best to have a smear to ensure the cervix is healthy before pregnancy.  This is usually done between days 7 and 21 of your cycle.

BREAST SCREENING

This is available to women over the age of 50 years.  They are taken every three years and a performed by the local breast screening service.  If you have not been screened and are over the age of 50, please contact your local Health Authority who will be able to advise you.

HORMONE REPLACEMENT/MENOPAUSE

If you feel that you may have symptoms related to the menopause or wish to discuss hormone replacement therapy, please make an appointment with the nurses. The practice has a range of resources to help you make decisions with regards to HRT.

MATERNITY CARE/PRECONCEPTION CARE

The doctors, with the assistance of the community midwives, are available for antenatal and postnatal care. Maternity clinics are held on Thursday mornings by the Hillingdon Hospital midwife and on Monday and Tuesday afternoons by the Watford Hospital midwife. Health visitors are also available to advise on parentcraft and babycare. Your own health is important if you are planning for a healthy baby. If you are thinking of starting (or increasing) a family please feel free to come and talk to one of the doctors.

FAMILY PLANNING AND CONTRACEPTIVE SERVICES

The practice nurses are fully trained in all aspects of family planning. A full range of family planning services and advice is available, including coil (IUCD) fittings, which are undertaken by the doctors with the assistance of the practice nurses.

DIETETIC CLINIC

The practice dietician is available to provide you with expert advice and support on a wide range of dietary matters such as weight reduction and lowering high cholesterol levels. Dietary advice regarding specific medical conditions such as diabetes is also provided.  Please see one of the doctors for a referral.

HEART DISEASE PREVENTION

In order to prevent heart attacks and strokes, the practice nurses and dietician offer advice, support and treatment to help stop smoking, reduce weight, increase exercise and lower cholesterol levels.

ASTHMA CLINIC

If you have asthma or use inhaled medications we expect you to have regular reviews in our asthma clinic. This is run by Sister Janet Moon on Tuesday afternoons.  She is highly experienced and trained in the management of asthmatics. Regular review is essential to ensure that you understand how to manage your condition and to assess the appropriateness of your medication.

DIABETES CLINIC

This clinic is run by Sister Jenny Warrington on Monday mornings. However, appointments at other times are sometimes available. It is essential for you to have regular follow up. You are most welcome to the clinic even if you receive most of your diabetes care from the hospital.

COUNSELLING

If you are troubled by depression, anxiety, relationship or stress related problems, appointments can be arranged through the doctor for you to see a community counsellor, which is held at the Health Centre. Help is also at hand for alcohol and drug related problems.

WART CLINIC

This clinic is held on a regular basis for the treatment of troublesome verrucae and warts. Active treatment of warts and verrucae is no longer recommended unless they are persistent, uncomfortable, spreading or cosmetically unacceptable.

MINOR SURGERY

Minor surgery is performed by Dr. Thakrar in our purpose‑built well‑equipped treatment room. Many skin lesions are easily removed under a local anaesthetic and a long wait for hospital treatment can usually be avoided. If you have a skin lesion that you are concerned about, then please come and see the doctor in the first instance in order to assess its suitability for surgery.

TRAVEL CLINICS

We provide a full holiday/travel vaccination service; offering protection and cover against yellow fever, meningitis, rabies, hepatitis A & B, typhoid and tetanus. Up to date advice is given for appropriate anti‑malarial protection. Most of this service is free to our patients. (There are a few exceptions which are not covered by N.H.S

Before you travel please complete a travel vaccination questionnaire so that the nurse can work out which vaccinations you need.  Please do this at least four weeks before you travel.  After a few days please contact the surgery to see which vaccinations you require and to book yourself into the travel clinic. We hold travel clinics twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays.  Appointments for travel vaccinations can only be made in these clinics.
